With the advent of a new MSJ website, wanted to extend a Very Special Thanks to Old Mill Head Coach and former MSJ Assistant Dan Youngblood

...for funding the creation of the MSJ Website and for covering the expense of hosting MSJWrestling.com on his company server for these many years. The MSJ Website was always the "coolest" and most up-to-date website of any on the wrestling scene. Beyond being an accomplished wrestler in junior league (wrestled for Coach Randy Bohlman) and high school (Old Mill), Dan has been a great coach and a good friend to MSJ wrestling. He is an integral part of the MSJ wrestling legacy, having coached the team to impressive finishes at the regional, state and national levels...and having coached and mentored the likes of Ryan Herwig, the Lewnes brothers, Alex Ward, John Kohler, Jake Bohn, the Gold brothers, the Dulski brothers, the Propst brothers, Andrew DePalma, Kevin O'Connor, Danny Whitenak, Jake Bohn, Austin Clouse, Chris King and many other standouts. Coach Youngblood is the kind of guy that gives everything he has for the sport of wrestling. Thanks Coach Youngblood...best of luck to you at Old Mill!

On the Mat

Catonsville, MD: The Mt. St. Joseph Wrestling team went 7-1 in dual meet competition and claimed the overall team championship at the UPenn camp July 8-12 at UMBC.  A roster of 22 MSJ campers and commuters brought the goods in a 36-21 beating of New Jersey power Kingsway Dragons, Tuesday night.  Gino Pollack (130), Jake Hulsey (136), Kevin Bohlman(145), Danny Orem (147) and  Tyler Tippett (160) all fought to tight wins by decisions, while Andy Biedlingmaier (115), Bobby Bowman (163) and Edwin Jackson (170) got those all-important falls to secure the dual meet victory.  We needed, and received, some help from Unionville , PA , when they beat Glenelg Tuesday night.  Earlier Tuesday afternoon we cam out flat against Glenelg and lost to Coach Bowman’s former charges while yielding 6 falls and gaining only 2.  That -4 fall spread is insurmountable in a dual meet – not just the points, but the momentum swing….. must be avoided at all costs.

Bolstered by the championship run through the takedown tournament brackets by Alex Rice (101), Andy  and Ed, along with a half-dozen other place winners (Mike Rovnan (204) avenged a loss to Glenelg en route to a 2nd place finish), MSJ Wrestling won the takedown tournament portion of the team competition on Wednesday night.

Poor showings in the push-up and frisbee football contests were overshadowed by the wrestling victories.  Congratulations to all of the wrestlers and thanks to all the parents that pooled together to make this a successful and memorable team experience.

Below is a list of wrestlers who competed and their dual meet results from camp:

Pins4Kids—Tay-Sachs—Conner's Way

Conner was a precious miracle and second son born to Carl and Desiree Hopf of Ellicott City, MD in January 2005.  From his first smile, his first cry, even his first breath, he was beautiful.  He was diagnosed with Infantile Tay-Sachs Disease in September, 2005 at the age of 7 ½ months.  Although Conner and his family attended an event for St. Mark’s in October, 2006 a cure was not in time to save his life!  It is with deep regret that little Conner earned his wings on November 26, 2006 at the mere age of 22 months.

Conner’s Way was started in his memory as a way of educating the public on Tay-Sachs and saving other babies & families from tremendous heartbreak.  His family will continue to make it their life’s work to rescue others from this devastating disease.

MSJ Wrestlers who have money to send in for your Pins 4 Kids commitment can make checks, payable to "NTSAD" (National Tay-Sachs) and mail to:

Mrs. Desirae Hopf, Conner's Way Foundation, 7746 Rockburn Drive, Ellicott City, MD 21043.  A receipt classifying the money as a donation to a bonifide charity will be issued and mailed back to you.  Please make sure a good return address is on your check and/or envelope. Coach Salvo will send the money collected at the banquet directly to Mrs. Hopf...and thank you for participating in Pins 4 Kids this year!

Baltimore Sun Features:

Kevin Bohlman Wins over McDonogh's Eder

Orem's key victory helps Gaels take down Friars

Sun reporter
Originally published January 19, 2007
Danny Orem held a four-point lead over Archbishop Curley senior Steve Kain last night when Mount St. Joseph coach Kirk Salvo signaled for him to go for the rout.

The sophomore responded, continually letting Kain to his feet and taking him down en route to scoring seven takedowns in a 17-6 major decision that paced the No. 2 Gaels to a 34-32 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference dual-meet win over the visiting third-ranked Friars.

When [Salvo] signaled for the optional start, it was time to go for the extra points," said Orem, whose Gaels (8-0, 5-0) won only six of the 14 bouts, but got pins from Frank Goodwin (103), Austin Clouse (112), Will Selba (145), Chris King (152) and Jake Bohn (189). "Making my score more lopsided, that added to our intensity down the stretch."

One of the Gaels' 10 underclassmen, Orem pushed the Gaels' lead to 34-23 with three bouts left. The Friars failed to make up the difference, mustering decisions by top-ranked Mitch Fenton (130), Ali Saadoulaev (135) and Russ Quillett (140), respectively, over underclassmen Benny Shaufele, Kevin Bohlman and Bobby Bowman.

The pins by Will Selba and King gave the Gaels an early 12-0 lead and "set the tone for the rest of the match," Will Selba said. "Coach said we needed a strong start, and I think that's what we gave him."

The Friars (9-1, 2-1) were within 12-11 after Mike Kulik (160) and Joe Foster (171) registered a pin and a 16-1 technical fall, respectively, with Foster scoring 10 near-fall points.

The Gaels pushed their lead to 18-11 after top-ranked Jake Bohn (189) earned his 21st pin of the season by beating fourth-ranked Sam Burdych, but the Friars were within 18-17 after sixth-ranked Josh Boler (215) edged third-ranked Jake Selba, 6-3, and Tony Powell (285) scored an overtime takedown to beat Karl Green, 3-1.

Goodwin and Clouse offset a pin by the Friars' Tyler Scarinzi (119) to give Mount St. Joseph a 30-23 lead.

"I thought after my match and Tony's, everybody was fired up," said Boler, who was coming off an injury to his right knee that forced him to default out of last weekend's Mount Mat Madness Invitational. "But down the stretch, we needed a little bit more and didn't get it."

MSJ Honors Seven Seniors and their Parents at Senior Night

MSJ coaches, wrestlers, families and friends gathered to honor seven MSJ seniors as they wrestled their final duals match at home in their high school careers. Honorees were:

  • Jake Bohn—Jake is Team Co-captain, a 2X MD State Champion, 3X MMM Champion, National Prep Runner-up, and a recent Baltimore Sun "Athlete of the Week". His father Vince was a star wrestler at MSJ.

  • Austin Clouse—Austin is Team Co-captain, a defending MIAA Champion and Maryland State Runner-up. He is a 3X All American with place finishes at Fargo, National Preps, PowerAde, MMM and Beast of the East.

  • Chris King—Chris is a defending MIAA Champion and placed fourth at the Maryland State Tournament last year.

  • Pat Lloyd—Pat has been a major contributor to team morale for four years. He is a dedicated wrestler that pushes the varsity wrestlers in the room on a daily basis.

  • Jake Selba—Jake is among the top-ranked wrestlers at 215 in the metropolitan area. He has consistently filled in the varsity line-up where needed, wrestling larger opponents and making personal sacrifices for the team's benefit. Jake placed 5th at MMM4—wrestling up 25lbs.

  • Jack Traut—Jack Traut's high school wrestling career was cut short by injury, but he stuck with the program and sacrificed personal time to travel with the team, filming the action and always providing an incredible boost to team morale.

  • Morgan Woolford—Though Morgan did not begin wrestling until his Junior year, he has demonstrated a level of hard work and dedication that enabled him to break into the varsity line-up in his second year.

These young men and their parents were honored for their hard work and dedication as their high school careers come to a close—and they move on to college pursuits and the challenges of adult life. Congratulations Senior parents—you did a great job!

Jake Bohn is Sun Athlete of the Week

Baltimore Sun Boy's Athlete of the Week: January 17th 2007

The 189-pound All-Metro senior pinned his 17th, 18th and 19th opponents to reach the title bout of last weekend's 27-team Mount Mat Madness Invitational at Goucher College. There, Bohn's reversal and two nearfall points in the last four seconds earned a 9-6 victory over Pennsylvania state runner-up Zac Bennett (17-1) of Westmont Hilltop, who is ranked No. 1 in his state at 189.

The win was the 127th in the career of Bohn, a returning National Preps tournament runner-up with a 30-4 record who joined former teammate Mack Lewnes, a four-time All-Metro selection and two-time Wrestler of the Year, as the Mount Mat Madness' only three-time champions.

To win last year's event, Bohn defeated Hammond 2A-1A state champion Steve Sessa and went on to win his second straight Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association and Maryland Independent Schools titles after having been a runner-up in each as a freshman.

Bohn earned All-Baltimore City honors as a football running back-linebacker.

Others considered // Vince Taweel, Hammond, wrestling; Malcolm Delaney, Towson Catholic, basketball; John Von Paris, John Carroll, wrestling.

MSJ JV 40—Curley JV 34

Coach Hoffman's analysis:                                                                                                                                      We had three first year wrestlers come up huge for the team...Steve Sutton (145) had a gutsy win to start the match (11-9)  Pete Jones (171) came up huge with a pin in the third period in response to Curley pinning our 160. Gino Pollock (119) stepped up with a fall in the second period to get the momentum back in our favor. Colin Bohlman (135) ensuring the win with his major (9-0). We had some returning wrestlers that showed some heart..Shane Canaday (152) pulling out the 1-0 decision , Jake Hulsey (125) coming up big with a third period fall to put MSJ up 30-28, Tyler Irvine (130) putting the match virtually out of reach with his second period fall to put MSJ on top 36-28. Even the guys who came up short…Steve Ritgert (160) put up a good fight off his back many times…showed a lot of heart. Tyler Linton (189) got caught...the last time he wrestled that kid it was a 1 point match at the Atholton Tournament.  T-Bone will get him at the MIAA’s. Tom Banister (215)  TAB was wrestling 215 but only weighed 191. Justin Deckert (103) this little guy is awesome!  I can’t wait until he puts on some weight and can break that 100 lbs...he is tough and hungry. Graceson Pastirik (112)  he just got caught…maybe trying to force some things and got himself into a bad position...he is a solid kid who should take the MIAA’s. Another great chapter in the MSJ vs Curley rivalry!

The Pins for Kids Fundraiser

MSJ Wrestlers: The Pins for Kids Program supports the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Dylan James Manning Foundation—organizations which help children with Tay-Sachs disease. The MSJ Wrestling Room was visited by the Hopf family who started the Connor's Way Foundation with great courage and love for their son Connor, who passed away this past November from Tay-Sachs disease.

The Pins for Kids program has been established to raise funds for children with Tay-Sachs. The form letter and tracking sheet are provided for those wrestlers who want to participate in this fundraising activity. Just push on the Control Key and click the links to open the form letter and tracking sheet. Remember, there are less than two months remaining in the wrestling season!

GA is almost due north of Philly. You can go north to PA via I-83 or up I-95 which is preferred by Mapquest. GA is most easily accessible from the Fort Washington exit of the PA Turnpike (exit 339).  After leaving the toll plaza, head straight to the end (the road winds around to the right) and you will be on Pennsylvania Ave.  Stay in the left lane and make a left onto Bethlehem Pike (fourth traffic light).  Make a right at the next light onto the Lafayette Ave. Connector.  If you are going to Admission, Classrooms, Administration or an indoor sporting event, at the next light make a left onto Lafayette Ave. and make the very first right into the driveway of Germantown Academy. At the top of the hill, make a left and at the end of the parking lot, make a right and park in one of the Visitor’s parking spaces.  The main building is located directly across from the lot.  If you are going to the Arts Center or the playing fields, make a right onto Lafayette Ave. (turns into Morris Road). The second driveway on the left is for the Arts Center. The parking lot for the Patriots’ athletic fields can be found on the left side after crossing the small bridge.

Coach Kirk Salvo's Summer Weight Lifting Program

The goal of off season weight lifting is to develop increased muscle endurance and power.  The benefits realized during the season will be manifold, from dominating opponents to a reduced possibility of injury.

You must invest a minimum of 1 hard hour 3x per week in weight training.  Worked properly, weight training is a cardiovascular workout – this means you should be breathing hard with a high heart rate for over 45 minutes.  Rest just adds time to your workout and decreases potential gains.  While it is satisfying to increase the amount of weight or repetitions (reps) worked, that is not the primary focus.  Work through muscle fatigue to failure.  Condition your body and mind to continue to push and pull when tired.

Any workout will suffice, provided it is worked hard.  Below is a list of exercises and a suggested workout:

Exercises:

1. Core:                                    Power Cleans* Situps

2. Lower Body Squats*            Hamstring Curls            Quad Extensions    Running Steps

3. Chest                                    Bench Press*               Inclined Bench  Dumbell Press/ Flies   Push ups

4. Shoulders                            Upright Rows                Lateral Raises   Military Press     Shrugs       Pull ups

5. Triceps                                 Extensions*                  Dips

6. Back                                    Lat Pull downs*             Chest Pulls       Dumbell Rows

7. Biceps                                 Curls                              Dumbell Curls/Pummelling

* most recommended—works multiple joints and muscle groups

 Sample Workout:

Warmup/jog/stretch

Bench Press (1), Power Clean (1), Lat Pull Down (1), reset weights

Bench Press (2), Power Clean (2), Lat Pull Down (2), reset weights

Bench Press (3), Power Clean (3), Lat Pull Down (3).

Tricep Extensions (1), Dumbell Rows(1), Situps (1), reset weights

Tricep Extensions (2), Dumbell Rows(2), Situps (2), reset weights

Tricep Extensions (3), Dumbell Rows(3), Situps (3)

Squats(1), Dips (1), Curls (1), reset weight

Squats(2), Dips (2), Curls (2), reset weight

Congratulations to Jake Bohn—Maryland Team Hammer and Kevin Bohlman—Team Central Maryland for their participation in the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) Tournament in Salisbury last week. The wrestling was extremely tough. Jake went 3-1 and Kevin got to wrestle the #2 wrestler in the nation in his weight class. Wrestling in the off season produces champions in season.

You should have seen the "52 Pounder" that got away!

At the cleaning table, the Caneelin' 32 Crew discovered that the 19 Pounder had eaten (and partially digested) a smaller Rock just before being caught. Where is the biology teacher when you need some extra credit?

2006 Dave Shultz High School Excellence Award: Northeast U.S.

—Mack Lewnes—

"The Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award is presented by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame annually to a high school senior. The award program is based equally on outstanding wrestling success, scholastic achievement and citizenship or community service.

Last week, the Hall of Fame announced its state-wide winners, as a winner of the honor was awarded for each state. The five Regional winners were selected from this pool of outstanding individuals.

This awards program is named in the honor of the late Dave Schultz, an Olympic and World champion, who set an example for excellence, both on and off the mat. Dave’s wife Nancy Schultz has played an important role in supporting this awards program."

Mack Lewnes, Mount St. Joseph Senior (Baltimore Sun 22 March 2006)

Lewnes ended the season with a record of 50-1, but has a 3-1 series lead over Ohio State champion Dave Rella, the only wrestler to defeat him this season. Headed to Cornell University, Lewnes has a four-year record of 151-12. He is a four-time first-team All-Metro selection.

Five players from the county are wrestling for Mount St. Joe.

Wrestling: County products help continue St. Joe's tradition
By SEAN BURNS, Staff Writer

Anyone who follows high school wrestling can tell you that Mount St. Joseph's of Baltimore has long had one of the best programs in the state.

The Gaels have amassed 10 National Prep Tournament titles, 24 state titles and their total of 50 MIAA individual tournament champions is 28 more than the next-best total in the conference's history.

What you may not have known is that, in recent years much of that success has been earned because of the sweat and hard work from products of Anne Arundel County.

"I followed my brother Sam up here," says Annapolis resident Mack Lewnes, who has won four MIAA and state titles and is the top ranked 160-pound wrestler in the country. "He came up here for the wrestling and the academics. I followed him up here because of how well he did."

Lewnes, who was named outstanding wrestler at the state tournament, is joined on the varsity by 103-pounder Austin Clouse of Annapolis, 135-pounder Jon Kohler of Annapolis, 145-pounder Chris King of Pasadena and 171-pounder Alex Ward of Davidsonville. All six were MIAA champions this season, while Kohler and Ward joined Lewnes atop the podium at last week's state championships.

"We've always had kids from all over come here," said Gael's first-year coach Kirk Salvo, an '84 graduate of the school and a two-time national preps winner. "This program has been a magnet for good wrestlers from around the state, but our link with the Navy Juniors program has been pretty good for us the past few years."

That link produced both Lewnes brothers (Sam won three MIAA titles and the 2002 state and national preps titles), Kohler (three MIAA and state titles), Ward (three MIAA titles, one state) and Clouse. Salvo says that there are also other Navy Juniors alumni on the team, so the talent continues to flow through that pipeline.

"We're always trying to get out and talk to people about this program," said Lewnes, who says he still stops by Navy Juniors practices when he's not preparing for tournaments or readying for his college career at Cornell. "I came up here when I was in eighth grade and worked out. I got my tail thrown around up here, but I learned a lot, and we try to get other kids to come here."

King, who will join his teammates at the prep tournament this weekend at Lehigh, is a product of another county juniors program, having grown up in Pasadena with the Buccaneers program.

McDonogh senior Joe Breen, another Buccaneers alumnus from Pasadena, was able to come back from torn cartilage in his knee in time to win both the MIAA and state titles for the Eagles, leading his team to narrow victories over Mt. St. Joseph's in both tournaments. He hopes that he can keep that streak going at the National Prep tournament, where he's one of the favorites in the 140-pound class.

"I'm excited. I love the competition," said Breen, who placed fifth as a freshman and fourth the last two seasons at the tournament. "I've always taken it one match at a time. Everyone wants to come in and knock off the No. 1 guy, and I'm right there."

McDonogh coach Pete Welch says it's no mystery why so many strong wrestlers come out of these county juniors programs. "The junior league coaches do a lot of great things with those kids," he said. "There's lots of good coaches, and the programs continue to draw kids that work hard."

Lewnes echoed Welch's feelings about the Juniors coaches. "It was definitely the coaches. (St. Mary's coach Wayne) Hicks and coach (Kelly) Ward were both national finalists, and coach Ward won a title at Iowa State. We were very fortunate to have them in Maryland."

Another local product expected to score well this weekend is Progressive Christian Academy's Michael Bressler, an Odenton native who took first place at the state meet and third at last year's national preps tournament.

For the Gaels, the best bets for top placement at the National Preps are Lewnes, Kohler and Ward. Lewnes has two second-place finishes to go with the title he won in 2004. To win his second championship, he will have to defeat Dave Rella of Walsh Jesuit, the only wrestler to defeat Lewnes this season.

"There's always tough guys at a tournament like that," Lewnes said. "There's kids that you know about, and there's other kids under the radar."

Kohler, whose brother Mike was a wrestler at St. Mary's, is also confident in his chances at Lehigh. "I feel pretty good about getting into the finals," he said. "There's a kid from (New Jersey's) Blair Academy named Max Shannon, but I like my chances."

With all of this county talent (along with several locals competing for St. Mary's, Archbishop Spalding and AACS), it could be a banner weekend for county wrestlers _ both in and out of area schools _ at national preps.

McDonogh wins MIAA for first time in 4 years

Mount St. Joe has record 8 champions, falls 3.5 points short
special to The Sun
February 12, 2006

As he wrestled in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association heavyweight consolation final yesterday, McDonogh sophomore Doug Schenk had no idea his team's championship hopes rested solely on his shoulders.

But as Schenk (27-11) pinned Rob Mutschler of Spalding, he vaulted McDonogh to an insurmountable total of 249.5 points -- 3.5 ahead of host Mount St. Joseph -- and its first MIAA tournament title in four years. Curley (204.5) finished third.

"It feels awesome," Schenk said. "I didn't know it all came down to me, but I'm glad I could win it for the team."

Schenk was one of 11 place-winners for the Eagles, who are without their injured 103-pound standout, Eric Filipowicz.

For McDonogh, Josh Fitch (112 pounds), Curtis Holmes (130), Joe Breen (140), and Bryn Holmes (152) won titles; Shane Milam (135), Kramer Whitelaw (145) and Alex Pagnotta (171) were second; Ben Levin (125), Kyle O'Brien (215) and Schenk third, and Albert Woody (119) fourth.

With four pins, including a fall in the final over Curley's Tyler Scarinzi, Fitch (17-3) won the event's award for scoring the most team points.

In other finals won by McDonogh wrestlers, Curtis Holmes (33-4) won, 4-2, over Annapolis Area Christian's Patrick McMahon (35-3); Breen (14-1) headlocked and pinned Loyola's James Davies (28-3) in 3:26; and Bryn Holmes (36-2) flattened Curley's Mike Kulik (26-10) in 45 seconds.

Though Mount St. Joseph was edged for the team title, the Gaels set an MIAA record with eight individual titles.

Austin Clouse (103), Dan Whitenak (119), Jon Kohler (135), Chris King (145), Mack Lewnes (160), Alex Ward (171), Jake Bohn (189) and Andrew DePalma (275) all stood atop the podium at their respective weights.

Lewnes (40-1) scored an 18-3 technical fall over Boys' Latin's Grady Gamble (11-1) to cap his fourth championship here and earn the event's Outstanding Wrestler award.

Clouse (25-12) won, 14-7, over Calvert Hall's Nik Gialamis (27-6), , and Whitenak (29-10) won, 2-1, on an overtime stalling call against Spalding's Chris Laidley (30-7).

Three Gaels beat McDonogh wrestlers in the finals. Kohler (35-7) scored a major decision over Milam (26-9), King (20-17) knocked off Whitelaw (26-7), who had defeated King three times this year, and Ward (35-4) bumped up from 152 to win in overtime, 8-6, over Pagnotta (28-7).

Bohn (28-3) needed only 12 seconds to headlock and pin Curley's Josh Boler (28-9). And DePalma (24-11) won, 2-1, over John Carroll's John Von Paris (32-5).

Other individual champions were St. Mary's Lou Ruland (125) and Curley's Joe Green (215). Ruland (35-4) edged Curley's Mitch Fenton (30-3) with a double-overtime escape at the buzzer. Green (30-3) beat John Carroll's J.T. Levendusky (30-5) by a 6-2 score for his second title.

King gives lift to Mount St. Joe

Sun reporter
Originally published January 18, 2006
Some of the wrestlers in Mount St. Joseph's lineup are expected to win; others need to if the Gaels are to successfully defend their Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference dual-meet title.

Junior Chris King knew he was in a must-win situation last night with his No. 1 Gaels trailing late in their match at No. 3 Archbishop Curley, and the 145-pounder came through.

King's takedown in the last 51 seconds secured a 3-1 decision over Brent Hooper that sparked three straight wins in a 41-26 victory.

King's win turned a 23-22 deficit into a 26-23 lead with four bouts left, and was followed by a major decision by No. 3 Alex Ward (152), a 49-second pin by No. 1 Mack Lewnes (160) and a second-period pin by No. 2 Jake Bohn (189).

The Gaels (10-1 overall, 5-0 league) also posted a 48-12 win over No. 5 Loyola (13-2, 1-2), which also lost, 36-24, to the Friars (9-1, 1-1) in the tri-meet.

"I know I'm a target for other teams," said King, who also scored his third career win over Loyola's Alex Tiernan, 7-5. It was Tiernan's first loss of the season.

"Tonight was a good example: [Curley] wanted to get a win off me. But when I was down 1-0 in the second period, I dug deep and overcame it."

In addition to King, Ward, Lewnes and Bohn, fourth-ranked Austin Clouse (103), No. 1 Danny Whitenak (119), No. 6 Greg Gold (125) and No. 1 Jon Kohler (135) all won twice for the Gaels.

Clouse, Gold, Lewnes and Bohn pinned all of their opponents. Gold pinned his Loyola rival in 29 seconds, and Kohler pinned his Loyola opponent in 42.

Whitenak, who decisioned two nationally ranked wrestlers last weekend, had a tougher-than-expected time in his 17-10 victory over Loyola freshman Colin Schuster (12-1).

Whitenak's early, 11-1 lead included nine near-fall points. But with the score 13-1 and a 15-point technical fall seemingly imminent, Schuster reversed Whitenak to his back to come within 13-5.

Whitenak still was in danger of being pinned as time elapsed ending the second period. To start the third, Schuster headlocked Whitenak nearly to his back yet again, but Whitenak recovered.

The Friars' double winners were No. 4 Tyler Scarinzi (112), No. 5 Mitch Fenton (130), Joe Foster (160-171) and No. 4 Joe Green (215). Green recorded a pin against Loyola, then bumped up to 275 for a 2-0 victory over No. 1-ranked Andrew DePalma, whom he controlled from start to finish.

With Curley's match with Loyola tied at 24 with two bouts left, consecutive pins by Foster and Mike Kulik (152) closed out the Friars' win.

James Davies (140) and Dan Peters-Rodbell (171) both won twice for Loyola, which is in the midst of one of its most successful seasons under coach Steve Truitt.

Mt. St. Joseph's Lewnes Plays Iron Man Role

Boys Athlete of the Week
Originally published December 14, 2005

A three-time private schools state and Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association champion, Mount St. Joseph's Mack Lewnes defeated Ohio State champ Dave Rella of Walsh Jesuit (Ohio), 8-7, for the title in last weekend's prestigious Iron Man Tournament at Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

In winning an event that is considered the nation's second-most difficult invitational, the three-time first-team All-Metro senior became the nation's undisputed No. 1-ranked 160-pounder. Lewnes had edged the Penn State-bound Rella, 4-3, in a match last season, yet the Ohio wrestler entered their matchup rated No. 1 in two national polls while Lewnes was top-ranked in a third.

But Lewnes dominated the field, scoring two pins and defeating two other rivals by a combined 12-1 before breaking a 6-6 tie with Rella on a takedown with 30 seconds left. An A-student who is bound for Cornell University, Lewnes was The Sun's All-Metro Wrestler of the Year in 2003-04. Lewnes will major in restaurant-hotel management.

MSJ's Alex Ward Headed to Lincoln

Congratulations Alex!

Lincoln - The Nebraska wrestling team opened the early signing period with a flourish by receiving National Letters-of-Intent from three accomplished prep recruits, Husker Head Coach Mark Manning announced on Wednesday. “We got three really outstanding kids today,” Manning said. “These guys all are good students, good wrestlers and have good character.” NU’s class is led by in-state recruit Matt Vacanti.  Joining Vacanti is Curtis Salazar of Greeley, Colo.  Salazar is a two-time Colorado state champion and a three-time state finalist.

Rounding out Wednesday’s signings is Alex Ward, from Mount Saint Joseph High School in Baltimore, Md.  Ward, projected to wrestle in the middle weights in college, is a two-time state champion at 145 pounds.  A fourth-place finisher the last two years in the national prep tournament, Ward is the son of three-time NCAA finalist and former NU assistant wrestling coach Kelly Ward.

“He’s an outstanding kid from a heralded program in Mount Saint Joseph High School,” Manning said.  “We expect him to improve and develop a lot in our program.  He’s an intelligent young man with great potential and upside.  He will help us out in the future.”

Coach Kirk Salvo's MSJ Pre-Season Weight Lifting Program

Squats(3), Dips (3), Curls (3). Done

This workout can be completed in less than one hour.  Move directly from one exercise to the next with minimum rest.  Arrange for a spotter where needed. Lifting with a partner is recommended  Shoot for 12, 9 then 6 reps per set, increasing the weight each set.  Situps, Pushups and Dips should be done to exhaustion.

Mix things up to provide variety, if needed.
