Thank you for the memories... and thank you for the fine examples that you have left for your team mates who remain behind at the Mount. The MSJ Family of parents, coaches, faculty, siblings and fans wishes the best to each and every one of you as you make your ways to new challenges in new places... like the Naval Academy, Merchant Marine Academy, Bowie State University, Anne Arundel Community College, Catonsville Community College, Morgan State University and West Point!

Austin Clouse—MSJ '07

Austin finished his high school wrestling career as a 4X All American... with a clinch place finish at the Beast of the East in his senior year.

Austin Clouse (112) is off to the U.S. Naval Academy via a prep year at Wyoming Seminary where he will wrestle for Coach John Gordon. Austin finished his senior year as Team Co-Captain with a 2007 record of 36-11 (14 pins). Austin spent his Freshman year on the Navy Junior Wrestling team because he was not heavy enough to wrestle 103 lbs in high school. Wrestling Freestyle & Greco with the Maryland National Team that summer, Austin placed 7th at the Cadet Nationals in Fargo at 84lbs. He broke into the varsity line-up at MSJ toward the very end of his Sophomore year—placing 6th at MIAA's, 8th at National Preps—and going 15-7 that year. As a junior, Austin placed 2nd at Colonial Forge, 1st at MIAA, 2nd at MIS and 7th at National Preps. He finished his senior year placing 2nd at War on the Shore, 3rd at Mount Mat Madness, 8th at Beast of the East, 2nd at Colonial Forge, 1st at MIAA, 2nd at MIS and 5th at National Preps

Austin's high school career record was 84--35. He was on the 2006 Baltimore Sun All-Metro Second Team,  2007 Baltimore Sun and Baltimore Examiner All-Metro First Team, and 2007 Baltimore Sun All City First Team.  Austin was also a 2X Maryland State Champion in Freestyle and Greco-Roman

Austin has no bigger fan than his sister Holly McDonald Clouse (GMU '10) who introduced him to the sport of crew (rowing) and taught him how to be a coxswain (cox'n). Holly's women's four boat beat Austin's men's four in a close race on the Potomac River in 2005. But while they are fierce competitors, Holly is always there to cheer Austin on to victory—and vice versa. Austin came up through the Navy Junior Wrestling program—coached by Division 1 All Americans Wayne Hicks and Kelly Ward. Austin took his leadership responsibility seriously, and was a hard working, good natured and determined wrestler who was always there to cheer on his fellow team mates and uphold the spirit and integrity of the Mount. Good luck,  Austin boy!

Jack Traut—MSJ '07

Jack with his mother, Lee Ann at Senior Night celebration. You could not find a more ardent supporter of the MSJ Wrestling Team.

Jack Traut (130) is off to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy via a prep year at the New Mexico Military Institute.  Jack began his wrestling career at MSJ in his junior year—nailing down the 130lb spot on the Junior Varsity. An elbow injury late in the season ended Jack's wrestling career—so he turned a negative into a positive and picked up the digital camera and became the team photographer...lugging camera bag and extension cord from tournament to tournament...flipping through the library of discs and getting the camera going for each match with seconds to spare...and adding prolific commentary to each recording! Jack's most famous exhortation to a team mate needing an escape was, "House on Fire Kevin, House on Fire!" ...at 140 decibels:-D  Jack's parents have been consistently strong supporters of Jack and fund raising activities like the Mount Mat Madness and MIAA food concessions.

You could say that Jack was actually the spirit of the team in 2006 and 2007. He always had something humorous or positive working...he was always the first to offer words of encouragement to a team mate who had just lost a match...he was very good at always keeping the sunny side up. Jack was not a star—on the wrestling mat...but he certainly was (and is) a star—off the mat! Good luck at USMMA, Jack!

Ira Cunningham—MSJ '07

Ira Cunningham was named Most Improved Junior Varsity Wrestler in his Junior Year.

Ira Cunningham (135) is off to the Bowie State University.  Ira began his wrestling career at MSJ in his Junior year—earning the 135lb spot on the Junior Varsity. Ira was awarded Most Improved Junior Varsity Wrestler for the 2005-2006 season and made good progression  through his senior year. Ira often had additional challenges of balancing wrestling with an after school job and his studies. Good luck at Bowie State, Ira!

Pat Lloyd—MSJ '07

Pat is a hard worker...a morale builder...and an avid competitor!

Pat Lloyd (145) is off to the Catonsville Community College.  Pat began his wrestling career at MSJ in his Freshman year—nailing down the 130lb spot on the Junior Varsity, he improved more and more each year winning the JV end of year tournament  his senior year. With that tournament, Pat thought his high school wrestling career was complete, but an injury left a hole in the varsity line up at 145 at the MIAA tournament. Pat jumped at the chance to wrestle and gave it everything he had. Pat missed placing by one match—and won admiration and praise from his coaches and team mates for his hard work and determination. His varsity record was 2-2.

Pat was a major contributor to team spirit and morale throughout his high school career. Like his team mate Jack Traut, he always had something humorous or positive working...he was always the first to offer words of encouragement to a team mate who had just lost a tough match...he was very good at always keeping the sunny side up. Pat's parents have been consistently strong supporters of fund raising activities like the Mount Mat Madness and MIAA food concessions. Congratulations Pat...and good luck at CCC!

Chris King—MSJ '07

Chris King crowned his high school career with a 7th place finish at National Preps for All American honors.

Chris King (152) is off to Catonsville Community College... finishing his Senior year at MSJ with a record of 38-14  (17 pins). Chris broke into the varsity line up in his Sophomore year with a 5th place finish at MIAA and a 6th place finish at MIS. Chris had several "nail-biter matches" with McDonogh arch-rival Kramer Whitelaw... coming out on top in two MIAA Championship finals. Chris also defeated two state champions in his senior year. In a 2005 dual meet with #1 ranked MSJ trailing #3 ranked Archbishop Curley, Chris's takedown in the last 51 seconds secured a 3-1 decision over Brent Hooper that sparked three straight wins in a 41-26 victory over Curley. His HS career record was 83-55 with the following honors: 2X MIAA Champion MIS Runner Up and a 7th place finish at National Preps.

Chris's parents have been consistently strong supporters of fund raising activities like the Mount Mat Madness and MIAA food concessions. Congratulations Chris... and Good Luck!

Morgan was a very successful wrestler on the Junior Varsity. His varsity record was 1-5. Good luck at Morgan State, Morgan!

Spotlight on MSJ Head Coach Kirk Salvo...

Coach Salvo is a 1984 graduate of MSJ. During his high school career, he was an excellent student, a Maryland State Champion and a two-time National Prep Champion (#1 Wrestler in the Nation in Private Schools). Coach Salvo graduated from Brown University with a degree in biology where he was the wrestling Team Captain and an NCAA qualifier. Salvo served as the head coach for Johns Hopkins University's wrestling team prior to his return to MSJ.

Last season Coach Salvo responded to MSJ's call  and returned to his alma mater and the wrestling room that was such an important part of his early development. In his first year of coaching at MSJ, seven wrestlers graduated with  all seven moving on to pursue college degrees (scroll down to see End of an Era below) and four of those seven were All-Metro Academic Honors students. Coach Salvo is a successful business man. He is married with 3 children and his son Zeke wrestles in junior league. Coach Salvo is in his second year as the head wrestling coach at MSJ. Coach Salvo was inducted into the MSJ Hall of Fame in 2006. He is pictured above at his induction ceremony with former (and famous) MSJ Head Wrestling Coaches: Hal Sparks (71-75), Jay Braunstein (01-05), Neil Adleberg (76-78), Coach Salvo, and Allen Smith (79-84).

Go Gaels—Study Hard—Work Hard—Fight—Win!

Spotlight on MSJ JV Coach Marc Hoffman...

Coach Marc Hoffman graduated from MSJ in 1997 and Michigan State University in 2001.. During his high school career he was an excellent student and wrestler. While a student at Michigan State University  he wrestled and also coached high school wrestling. In 2005 he returned to MSJ as the Director of Admissions and Assistant Wrestling Coach. Coach Hoffman is a talented coach and popular with the junior wrestlers—teaching them the basic techniques, strength and conditioning and mental toughness, and readying them for the next level of competition at the varsity level.

Spotlight on MSJ Athletic Director Paul Triplett...

Coach Paul Triplett (far left in purple jacket) is a 1979 graduate of MSJ. As a high school wrestler, he was a two-time Maryland State Champion. Paul was the MSJ wrestling coach from 1988-1997 and during that period of time,  produced 10 straight Maryland State Championship Teams and 4 National Prep Championship Teams (a standing record at MSJ). His demonstrated excellence in coaching high school sports and leading young men in the successful pursuit of athletics and academics resulted in his selection as MSJ Athletic Director in 1998. Coach Triplett was inducted in to the MSJ Hall of Fame in 1991and is certainly one of the most talented and accomplished leaders and servants of his alma mater in the school's history.

Spotlight on Former MSJ Coach Neil Adleberg...

Neil Adleberg taught and coached at MSJ from 1976 to 1978. I know he looked different at our recent meeting, but this picture is 29 years old! It features Neil with five members of the 1977 MD State and National Prep Championship team: John Hefner (former MSJ coach and Hall of Fame), Harry Barnabae (MSJ Hall of Fame), Vince Bohn (Jake's Dad), Jay Braunstein (former MSJ coach) and Rick Romeo. MSJ has won over 30 state championships in the past 36 years, and Neil set the stage for wrestling excellence at MSJ.

In January 2004, Neil stepped up and created Mount Mat Madness - a regional tournament which now draws wrestlers and over 5,000 fans from five states over a two day period for some of the best high school wrestling on the east coast of the United States. The proceeds from the tournament help to support the MSJ wrestling program. Neil is not only a friend of MSJ but a he is a philanthropist, a mentor and a wrestling icon. He has repeatedly given back to the school and the sport of wrestling, and was the recipient of USA Wrestling Magazine's 2005 Man-of-the-Year Award.

Spotlight on MSJ Volunteer Coach Rob Bowman...

This is Coach Rob Bowman's first year as coach in the MSJ wrestling room. Coach Bowman came to MSJ from Glenelg High School where he was the head wrestling coach from 2000 to 2006 with a 62-33 record. Coach Bowman was named Howard County Coach of the Year in 2006 by the Baltimore Sun.  Coach Bowman was a three sport varsity athlete at Andover High School ('77) and McDaniel College ('81). Upon graduation from college, Coach Bowman was commissioned in the Army and served our country in Special Forces units. Coach Bowman brings his freshman son, Bobby to MSJ. The coach is a successful business man, is married and has a college aged daughter at Penn State University.
